Eating Disorders

Eating disorder

08/28/2007

Question:

my friend has anorexia and i think she might be self harming, i have seen scars on her arms, is this normal behaviour or could she have depression as well she seems to be moody, and a bit snappy.

Answer:

Many persons who have anorexia nervosa may also have depression or anxiety disorders. If your friend is doing self harm behaviors in addition to her restriction of foods and other anorexia patterns, you have a right to be concerned.

Let her know of your concern, because sometimes when a person cuts or harms herself, she is really hoping someone will notice and say something to be a support for her to get help.  There may be a lot of pain she does not know how to manage, and is doing it in this harmful way.

Let her know your care, that because you care you are saying something to her, and encourage her to get a consultation for depression and her eating disorder. A professional could then help her sort through her pain.
