Bleeding following a pap smear

09/10/2007

Question:

I had a pap smear 1 month ago and I have went from brown discharge to spotting to the point as to where I have placed a tampon with alot of blood. It is as if I have a continual oozing of blood. What could be causing this and should I be worried

Answer:

It is not typical to have such prolonged bleeding after a Pap smear. It is most likely not due to the Pap, but related to a cervical infection or possibly a cervical polyp. You should return to your healthcare provider who performed the Pap smear and have him/her look at the cervix.
