Dental Anesthesia

How long does novacaine last?

10/05/2007

Question:

I had a wisdom tooth extracted at 10 a.m., it has been over 14 hours and my bottom lip and front lower gums are numb, but the area around the wisdom tooth is not. How long will this last?

Answer:

This may be due to nerve injury, or a long-acting local anesthetic was used with prolonged effects. If your numbness continues into the next day, you should call your dentist to have this evaluated. In the vast, vast majority of cases, sensation will return to normal but it may take weeks or months depending on the diagnosis. It may be that the effects have already worn off by the time you get this response in which case, all is well.
