Is Acupuncture a Good Treatment for Back Pain?

01/30/2008

Question:

After having kyphoplasy, I experienced immediate releif. A year later I am experiencing cronic pain. My question is...What are your thoughts on trying acupuncture to relieve this discomfort?

Answer:

Acupuncture has good evidence to support its use in pain relief, although the effects are temporary. If performed with sterile needles by a licensed professional, it can be considered safe (so even if you do not benefit, it will not cause you harm). You may also benefit from a TENS unit which is a small device that can be worn during waking hours that produces a small electrical current on your skin that assists the brain in blocking the pain signal. It is also considered safe and can provide temporary pain relief.
