Bilateral strokes10/17/2007 |
I had two major Bilateral strokes during open heart surgery. I also found out that I have Grave disease.
Did this cue the stroke?
There has been some connection drawn between thyroid disease and stroke, especially hyperthyroidism (like Graves Disease). However, open heart surgery has a known risk for stroke that typically ranges between 2-4% due to the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. It is possible that the Graves Disease contributed, but hard to say that hyperthyroidism was the sole cause rather than the surgery.
