High Blood Pressure |
High blood pressure following heart cath10/16/2007 |
My father recently underwent heart catherization and had 3 stents placed in 2 arteries. Since this procedure they have not been able to acquire a normal blood pressure with it reaching as high as 200/92. Could there be a reason for his blood pressure to be so high?
Usually, cardiac catheterization and stent placement do not cause an elevation in blood pressure. However, there are several possibilities for your father's worsening of his blood pressure:
- His medications have been changed and need to be adjusted.
- He developed atheromatous emboli. This disease is caused by dislodging an atherosclerotic plaque in his aorta. Such an event can cause the breaking off of small fragments of cholesterol which then lodge in many places, including the renal arteries. Such emboli can cause hypertension.
- Your father sustained a mild form of injury to his kidneys, causing them to release substances that raise the blood pressure.
In any case, your father will need to be examined for the presence of any of those problems. He will need to be treated aggressively to lower his blood pressure to 130/80 or less if at all possible.
