Haemachromatosis and low ferritin12/27/2007 |
Hi Can you tell me if it is possible to have a normal ferritin and still have haemachromatosis ? Thanks
Yes. A ferritin is simply a test that measures the overall storage of iron in the body as a rough estimation. Hemochromatosis refers to the genetic trait to develop iron overload but does not necessarily mean that iron overload exists.
So yes, you could have a normal ferritin after treatment, or in some people who have donated blood, or for other causes.
