Complex ovarian cysts

10/26/2007

Question:

I am a 37 year old female. I was seen in the ER about 2 months ago for pelvic pain. They did a pelvic us and was diagnosed with one ovarian cyst on the right and two complex ovarian cysts on the right measuring 5 and 2 cm. The reported stated that the complex cysts may be hemorrhagic in nature. I am not currently insured until Dec 1. I am however concerned because I heard that complex cysts can be cancerous, is this true? Also the symptoms I have are mod pelvic pain at times, frequent urinating (no uti`s) are these symptoms characteristic of ovarian cysts?

Answer:

The symptoms are typical to both benign and malignant ovarian cysts. At your age, you are at low risk, but it needs to be followed up. Typically, a benign cyst like a hemorrhagic cyst will resolve over time. The typical response would be to repeat the ultrasound in 6 weeks to look for resolution. Waiting until Dec. would be too long. You should look for a local health clinic that can provide care for a lower fee or for free depending on your ability to pay.
