Extended breast pain

11/26/2007

Question:

Hi, I have always had some type of breast pain prior to my menstrual cycle but this month the tenderness started about 2 weeks prior, continued throughout my period and afterwards. They feel engorged and hot.

Should I be seeing a doctor. I am a bit concerned because they are really sore and I am unable to even lie down on my stomach because of the pain.

Answer:

It’s hard to pin down a diagnosis from what you say. Breast pain on both sides can come from a variety of causes. Usually we’d want to assess what medications you are taking, if there is a history of cancer or other previous breast disease, if there are any lumps in the breasts, or if you have nipple discharge.

We’d also want to know if there has been any trauma or changes in the skin. We’d also like to know if you are pregnant. The best thing to do is to make an appointment with your clinician and have it evaluated.

Hope this helps!
