Loss of taste

12/05/2007

Question:

I don`t know what has happened...I can smell but my taste is gone i can kind of taste but its bland and i can feel texture or heat and cold..please help I dont know whats wrong this has been going on for a week.

Answer:

Diminished taste (technical tern is hypogeusia) can be associated with various infections (often viral) but is most often associated with reduced saliva production (dry mouth or xerostomia). It can also be seen with a wide number of medications. Since many medications also lead to dry mouth, this would be the first thing to consider. Reduced or altered taste can also be a part of burning mouth syndrome, and you can find additional information about this condition by following the links below.

If the problem persists for more than another week, I would suggest you see your physician to exclude other potential causes.

Good luck!
