Loss of taste

Question:

In the last couple of days I am noticing that food has lost its taste. Everything I east has a flat taste. What could be wrong. I`ve had a metalic taste in my mouth off and on for a few weeks but the change with the food has been just this past week. I wear full dentures and I am a smoker.

Answer:

Alterations in taste, smell and feeling in the mouth can be part of a condition called burning mouth syndrome. (See link below.)

But first, it is important to exclude the possibility of other conditions, such as a fungal infection of the mouth. To insure that you have the correct diagnosis, I recommend that you make an appointment with your dentist or a dental specialist such as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or pathologist
