Thyroid removal and lung clots12/07/2007 |
My 34 year old niece had a cancerous thyroid removed a year ago. A scan today revealed blood clots in her lungs and in her abdomen. Her thyroid medication is not yet regulated and she just was on antibiotics for pneumonia. What caused the clots and what is the treatment and prognosis?
It is hard to say anything specific about your niece, but patients that have a diagnosis of cancer can be more prone to getting blood clots, which may be what is going on here. The prognosis depends on a lot of factors, most importantly the status of her cancer. I would encourage your niece to ask these question of her doctor, and even consider having her seen by a hematologist or other expert with experience in blood clotting problems.
