Pelvic ultrasound question - missing ovary

12/07/2007

Question:

I had regular cycles for over 7 years, every 28-30 days, lasting 4 days until 3 months ago. heavy bleeding, lasting over 3 weeks. ultrasound results give dimensions of uterus and right ovary, but say `left ovary is not identified` and tech wrote `this study was technically difficult`. What might cause these notes in the study?

Answer:

There are many reasons for being unable to see the ovary on an ultrasound. The bowel could obscure the view. The ovary, which hangs freely from the uterus, could be shifted and difficult to see. It is really of little significance. If there was something wrong with the ovary, like a mass or cyst, it would be easier to see, not harder.
