What are the complications?

Question:

My mother had all of her teeth removed so that she may wear dentures. While waiting for her teeth to be removed, she complained of pain saying on a daily bases that there was still pieces of the tooth left in the gum. Therefore, she pick at her gum area causing awful infections and treated several times for that cause. Now she is saying that she needs corrective surgury on her mouth. She also has TMJ. Could any of this cause corrective surgery.

Answer:

Your mother should be checked by a dentist or prosthodontist (denture specialist) to see if there truly are issues with her healing. However, causing infections by picking at your body is not an appropriate behavior regardless of where healing is taking place and may need to be addressed by a behavior specialist.
