Cancer

Beast cancer and menopause

01/03/2008

Question:

I have been told that a glass of soy milk can help alleviate my symptoms of hot flashes that I am presently experiencing. However, having successfully survived breast cancer several years ago, someone also told me that taking a glass of soy mailk is not healthy if I have had breast cancer. Is this true??

Answer:

Soy products such as soy milk do contain some natural plant estrogens and experts disagree as to whether they might promote the recurrence of breast cancer. I tell my patients that it is OK to use soy products. It is unlikely soy will do much to improve your hot flash symptoms, however. Your doctor could suggest some prescription medications that might help.
