Diabetes |

can you have sex with a women with diabetes who has a open ulcer wound on here ankle. If so is this contagious and how do I protect myself?
The question came to me as a diabetes expert but the diabetes is really not pertinent to the question. The essence of the question is whether it is safe for both parties to have sex when one of them has an open ulceration, which may potentially be infected. In the broadest sense, there is both the matter of whether the wound will be harmed or exacerbated by having sex and also the matter of whether either person is at risk of developing an infection elsewhere as a result of the activity. The ulceration needs to be evaluated medically, with a determination whether there is an active infection which needs either to be cleaned out (the technical term is "debrided") and have a dressing applied or to be treated with either local application of antibiotics or administration of antibiotics either by mouth or through an IV (intravenous) line. Until that assessment is made and the appropriate care initiated, it is difficult to say whether there is risk - therefore it would be prudent to delay sex until that has been done. The health care provider who evaluates the wound and initiates care would then be in a better position to determine what risks may be involved and when it is safe to proceed.
