Sickle cell anemia chromosome question

01/05/2008 07:41PM

Question:

Which chromosome does the mutation occur upon? Which gene? Where on the chromosome, on both or on one? Thank you

Answer:

The mutation occurs in the 6th codon of the beta globin gene located on chromosome 11. If one gene is affected the individual has sickle trait (carrier) and if both genes are affected the individual has sickle cell disease.
