Kidney dilation01/23/2008 |
When an ultrasound was done on my 10 year old nephew they said there was dilation of the kidney. What does this mean and how is it treated?
Dilation of the kidney means dilation of the collecting system, where urine collects in the pelvis of the kidney, before it drains into the ureter. Another term for it is hydronephrosis. It may be mild, moderate, or severe. There are many causes for dilation, such as obstruction of the ureter or urinary reflux, so usually other tests are performed to determine whether a significant abnormality is present.
