Depressed using Implanon01/22/2008 |
Hello, I have been using Implanon for just over two months and have experienced a range of unpleasant side effects. The side effect that bothers me most is my mood - I`ve felt very depressed since I had the implant put in (I am prone to depression). My doctor told me I must wait until 2-4 months to see if the effect wanes but she really didn`t seem to know all that much about it. Do you know if the effect of the progestins on lowering serotonin is a permanent effect or whether it will wear off with time? Thanks for your help,
CG - UK
There is little evidence that implanon users are more prone to depression. Most of the literature on progestins and depression is mixed, but favors no influence on mood. Having said that, hormones can have effects throughout the body so there is no reason to think that you might not have alterations in mood secondary to the medication. This would especially be true if you had problems with other hormones like birth control pills, depo provera injections, etc. I would expect that a lot of the effects should resolve in 2-3 months. This is true of most hormonal side-effects of contraception such as breast tenderness, nausea, etc. If you are able to wait it out, it might be for the best considering the inconvenience of having it removed so soon after placement.
