STD or PID?

01/29/2008

Question:

I recently was diagnosed with Chlamydia. I had a baby in June 07 and the IUD Mirena placed in August 07. I wasn`t tested for an STD before it was put in. The only time I believe I could have been infected was in March of 2006. That`s almost 2 years I had Chlamydia and didn`t know. I didn`t have any symptons until 2 weeks ago. Me and my partner were both treated and he feels better, but I do not. I still have pelvic pain constantly and lower back pain. What are my chances of having PID? I am most worried about how it may have affected my fertility.

Answer:

If you were recently diagnosed with Chlamydia, it is likely that you contracted it before March 2006 since it would have been screened for in your prenatal visits. If you have now been treated and feel well, it is unlikely that you now have PID, but if you are having back and pelvic pain, you should be seen to make sure it hasn't progressed to PID since that could affect your fertility.
