Slimy brown discharge

06/30/2008

Question:

Last month I started taking the birth control pill loestrin 24. I took the first month of pills and now I should be starting my period, but instead I have slimy brown discharge. It can be very thick and clumpy at times. I am a little concerned because I had an abnormal pap. and had to go and get a biopsy taken. Is the abnormal "period" due to the birth control or the biopsy? Or could it be pregnancy?

Answer:

The bleeding you experience on oral contraceptives is different than a normal menstrual cycle. Generally it is lighter and may be a very small amount. This is because the lining of the uterus, the endometrium, does not get as thick and there is not as much to shed. A cervical biopsy can also cause you to have some dark bleeding. If there is any chance you could be pregnant, you should get a pregnancy test done.
