Periods started again while on HRT

Question:

have been on vivelle dot .05, and a week a month on oral progesterone while still on vivelle ... I feel great and all is well ... except for I don`t like being on my period again every month ... when will it ever stop? I`m 55.

Answer:

Using the progesterone one week a month instead of every day often leads to having periods again.  A standard recommendation these days is to use the progesterone at least 12 days a month to prevent endometrial cancer.  There are two ways you might be able to eliminate the bleeding:

1)  Reduce the dose of the Vivelle dot and use the progesterone 12 days a month

2) Use the progesterone every day.  (e.g., Prometrium 100 mg at bedtime every night or 2.5 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate every day with your current, or a lower, dose of Vivelle dot)
