Metal allergy02/01/2008 |
I recently had surgery where a monarch bladder sling was placed for my bladder. I was not aware that they used titanium screws placed to the pubic bone to hold this mesh in, however, I am allergic to metal and have never been able to wear belts, etc.. Is there anything I can do to stop the allergy without having to reverse the surgery?
Titanium is a relatively inert metal and seldom causes problems. Individuals have more trouble with nickel and cobalt. If the screws are pure titanium, it is unlikely that the metal allergy is causing your problems. However, to be sure, a few specialty centers (including ours) are equipped to test for a spectrum of metals to see if you are sensitized and therefore at risk for a metal allergy reaction.
