Weird left side pain/ right back

02/07/2008

Question:

About a week ago, I got this left side pain that went to my navel area and down to my RLQ (right lower quad). I went to the ER and they said my appendix was fine and sent me home. When I got home the pain got SEVERE. Eventually subsided. Now I have this gnawing pain in my back on the right, kidney area, and a stabbing/cramping pain on my left side under my rib cage. Could this indicate kidney problems? I have had a Urinalysis done to check for UTI and that was clear. What could be the problem? Just looking for some feedback. Thanks!!!

Answer:

Your pain does not sound like it originates from the kidneys -- please see the link to the article on kidney pain.  The changing nature and movement of the pain suggests that it may either be musculoskeletal or possibly related to the bowels.  Rather than going to the ER, it would be better to go to your primary physician, describe the pain to them, and have them examine you at a time when you are in pain.  It is possible that imaging studies may be needed, if you have not already had these.
