How Long Does a Osteopenia Patient Need to be on Fosamax?02/26/2008 |
How long does a person with osteopenia need to be on Fosamax? I`ve heard five years maximum due to problems the medication can eventually cause.
The duration of treatment with Fosamax is controversial. It could depend on the severity of your osteopenia. If it was in the mild range, you may not need to take Fosamax. If if was almost osteoporosis and you are an older person at risk for hip fracture, you may want to continue it. If your bones are improved or stable on Fosamax, some experts say you can take a drug "holiday" for one or two years.
