Answer:

An anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) test seeks to identify flourescence within a cell nucleus (the central components within a cell). The area outside of the nucleus but still within the cell membrane is called the cytoplasm. Infrequently, in the process of performing an ANA test, cytoplasmic flourescence is identified. It is a non-specific finding, but speak with your physician to better understand if it significant based on your clinical scenario.
