What Does “Cytoplasmic Fluorescence Present” in a ANA Test Mean?

03/03/2008

Question:

My ANA test results were negative, but the lab noted that “CytoPlasmic Flourescence Present”. What does this mean?

Answer:

An anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) test seeks to identify flourescence within a cell nucleus (the central components within a cell). The area outside of the nucleus but still within the cell membrane is called the cytoplasm. Infrequently, in the process of performing an ANA test, cytoplasmic flourescence is identified. It is a non-specific finding, but speak with your physician to better understand if it significant based on your clinical scenario.
