Abnormal bleeding at my age

02/14/2008

Question:

Hi there! i just turned 30 years old in november. i have had a tubal ligation. i`m not pregnant. about 1 month ago i started spotting about 10 days after my period. it wasnt a flow like a period, just spotting when i wiped. then after intercourse i would bleed a lot. my dr. scheduled me for blood work, pelvic ultrasound, and urialysis. He said everything came back normal except on my ultrasound they said i have an enlarged uterus. he said it was 13cm. since then i had another period with heavy cramping the first day. he then did a pap smear and a scraped my uterus to send off for a biopsy. I am very concerned. I know my body and nothing like this has ever happened. My dr. is trying to say it`s all related to how much sugar i eat. he said i`m eating to much sugar and that`s why all of this is happening. I just dont believe that and i was wondering what your opinion is behind this. also have been very fatigued and depressed. not wanting to leave the house and just crying and sleeping. look forward to hearing from you.

Answer:

Abnormal vaginal bleeding can have many causes, and it sounds like you are having appropriate tests by your doctor to find the cause.  While eating sugar does not directly influence your menstrual bleeding, gaining too much weight can have a bad effect on your cycles.  Women who are overweight are more likely to have irregular periods, heavy periods, and abnormal growth of the uterine lining that could even lead to cancer.

The symptoms of fatigue, sadness, and crying are probably not directly related to the bleeding, but could be signs of depression, which can be triggered by many different issues.  It sounds like you should speak with your doctor about getting help for these symptoms, or finding a mental health facility in your area.  Information on depression is also available on this website.
