Burning skin- armpits, legs, neck, arms

02/26/2008

Question:

what is the cause of Burning skin- armpits, legs, neck, arms?

Answer:

We do not know much about the cause of the symptom of burning of the skin. The first question is to ask is their a rash or dryness causing the burning sensation. If there is, then the rash has to be diagnosed and treated. If there is not a rash, then causes such as medications need to be looked at. If there was a medication (over the counter remedy, prescription, or illicit drug) started prior to the onset of the symptoms, then you need to speak to your physician about that and see if they agree you stop them. If it is medication related, it can takes weeks to months to get improvement. If no cause is found, then neurologic conditions and psychiatric conditions can occasionally cause these symptoms. Underlying cancers (e.g. of the blood) may rarely cause that as well. I recommend you see your board certified dermatologist for an evaluation.
