Anxiety and Stress Disorders (Children)

Headbutting at Bedtime

04/08/2008

Question:

I have a one year old girl who appears to be normal in every way. She is very interactive but she will hit and bite if she is excited. She plays with 3 older girls up to age 8. The problem is when she is put to bed at night she butts her head on the bed, she talks to herself and rocks until she fall asleep. She does not cry. I am most concerned about the head butting. Do you have any ideas of why she is doing this? Any suggestions on how we can stop this behavior? Thanks for any advise that you have.

Answer:

The behavior you describe is quite normal for a one year old. The self-stimulation that accompany rocking and such is not atypical, but see your pediatrician for more definitive advice on this matter.
