Recurrent cervical cancer

03/12/2008

Question:

I was diagnosed in 1999 with cervical cancer, had hysterectomy. Cancer returned April 2007, had chemo/radiation treatment. 3 months ago pet scan was clear, had checkup pap came back abnormal could the cancer be back even though pet scan was clear?

Answer:

The pap smear is a screening test, not a definitive test. It looks for microscopic changes, the PET scan looks for bigger lesions than the pap. Having said that, the pap my just be abnormal because of all the treatment you have had. It could make the cells look abnormal.
