Colorectal Diseases

Diagnosed with IBS

04/08/2008

Question:

I`m 22 years old and I started to have colon problems when I was 15. At first I thought it`s because of change of food and/or daily routine, etc. The pain and diarrhea kept getting worse, so I decided to see a doctor. I have actually seen many doctors, and each of them have diagnosed me with IBS.

I have tried many medications such as Zelnorm, Nexium, lots of antidepressants, some powder medicines and many more that I can`t even remember all names. None of them has worked, and my symptoms are still the same and sometimes getting worse. I`ve read many articles about IBS and all of them say fatty foods and lack of sleep can cause IBS. I`m very slender (100 lbs) and I eat healthy food every day. I also get about 9 hours of sleep everyday, and have an easy desk job.

I`m currently taking Imodium (2 a day) and Metamucil - Fiber Vitamin. Anybody has any suggestions what medicines should I take?

Answer:

It would be difficult for me to second-guess the experts you have seen; sounds like you have been given good advice.

You may consider the use of probiotics and other complementary therapies if traditional medicines have not helped.
