Giving advanced PH patient comfort at home03/13/2008 |
What can be expected when giving drops of liquid morophine to patient with oxygen sats of 70. caring for father at home with advanced PH from Amioridorone. Given for 5 years after heart surgery to maintain sinus rthym. Any tips on keeping him comfortable would be appreciated.
When people have advance lung disease, they need to breathe quite fast to maintain their oxygen levels. They also feel like they are being smothered. The morphine helps take this discomfort away, so we usually dose the morphine to achieve patient comfort. The main side effect of morphine is that it makes the patient sleepy, and it lowers their respiratory rate. These may cause the patient to fall asleep.
