Calcification found in lung

03/18/2008

Question:

I am a 67 year old who had a spot on my lung since I was a young boy 10 or so. I was told by a doctor back then that it was from working on a chicken farm. I went to the doctor today and they found a spot on my lung and did an ct scan and found that it was a calcified spot and it is or from what he described is large. It said it was the size of his fist and before it was very small. Should I be worried? Where should I go from here. He did not seem worried as he said it was calcified and did not look cancerous but I am very worried.

Answer:

Calcified lung nodules are typically benign. They are frequently a result of prior infection, especially fungal. If you have risk factors for cancer, particularly smoking, and are concerned, then it might be reasonable to repeat the scan in 12 months. Another option would be to seek a consultation with a pulmonary specialist, either a pulmonologist or a thoracic surgeon.
