Vaginal discharge and odor03/20/2008 |
Hi. I`m 19 years old, and on some days, for maybe a week at a time, I have a brown vaginal discharge that does not smell good. I always wear liners just in case. Is this normal?
Some vaginal discharge can be considered normal. A normal or physiologic vaginal discharge can be noticed at midcycle, or two weeks after the start date of your last menstrual period. This discharge is usually clear to white in color and has no odor. It usually lasts until the start date of your next menstrual period. As you get closer to the start date of your period, this discharge can become brown, typically 1-2 days before the start of menses. You will also notice a brown discharge at the end of your period; this is considered normal.
A prolonged brown discharge (more than 3 days) is usually an indication that there is vaginal bleeding present. As blood ages, it turns from red to brown. A brown discharge outside the typical menstrual cycle can be an indicator of irregular menses, pregnancy, uterine fibroids, or infection.
Schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss your symptoms and have a pelvic exam.
