Urinary Disorders

Unknown cause of bladder spasms

04/12/2008 01:25AM

Question:

Hi, I`m a 28 year old female who`s been suffering from painful spasms after voiding for over three years. They last from 5-15 minutes and happen about 80% of the time. At first, it was thought to be an infection but urinalysis was normal. Then, I had a cystoscopy and that was normal too. I do not have incontinence or interstitial cystitis. I went to various specialists (gynos, GI`s, internists, even neurologists). I`ve had MRI`s, sonograms, minor exploratory surgery and they cannot find the cause of these spasms. Sometimes the pain is so unbearable I have to bend over and press on my abdomen. One doctor thought perhaps I have bladder endometriosis, but the period suppressor pills do not abate the spasms and I guess the cystoscopy would have seen it.

I`m at a loss as to what to do. I feel like I`ve tried and explored every option, but I`m still at square one after all these years. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:

Your condition is likely to be related to neurological disorder even though it does not reveal itself. After cystoscopy and urodynamic study, you may need to have a colonoscopy as well. If all is negative, then the therapies include Interstem, which is an electrode placed in the area of sensitivity or the use of Botox in the bladder wall.
