Urinary Disorders

Difficulty urinating

04/17/2008 12:33PM

Question:

I have been having a problem starting to urinate, sometimes it takes me 20 minutes to start and then have stops. I had urologists take a look and they said it looked like where the passage from my bladder is very small and a little off center. They used a "balloon" procedure to attempt to enlarge the passage, but after the procedure there is no change. I am 23 years old, so they said I have limited options without impacting my fertility. What can be done to resolve this? My social life is limited because I can`t go anywhere and sit in a bathroom for 20 minutes waiting to go.

Answer:

It is unusual to have prostate blockage at a young age. These conditions can be either congenital, such as posterior urethral valve or due to scarring of the urethra. A good examination including urodynamic study and cystoscopy will give the doctor enough information to treat without causing infertility.
