Pregnancy

Clear (mucous-like) vaginal discharge

04/21/2008 12:45AM

Question:

I started taking amoxicillin two days ago for an upper respitory infection. I am 24 weeks pregnant. This afternoon and evening I notice quite a bit of clear, odorless, mucous-like, discharge (from vagina) after straining to have a bowel movement. Could the anti-biotic be causing the discharge? If not, what could it be?

Thank you

Answer:

Antibiotics, especially penicillins, can cause a yeast infection. However, your symptoms are not consistent with a vaginal yeast infection. It can be normal to have a clear discharge in pregnancy. To be on the safe side, I suggest you discuss this with your doctor.
