Swelling of area just above ankle, bump swells

04/24/2008 11:25PM

Question:

after bumping my lower leg, at the bone on a fork lift,I now notice after a few weeks have pasted, that i have a bump there, and it swells after standing on it all day. It is sore to the touch, could i have a bone chip?

Answer:

Most likely this is a hematoma (collection of blood) or an irritated vein in the area of the injury.  Standing on the feet all day increases the pressure in the leg and can make areas of injury swell since the tissue has not completely healed yet.  If you are walking on the leg, a fracture is possible although not likely.  Wearing support hose (female) or support socks or even an ACE wrap on the area while working, using anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen and elevating the leg with application of ice for 30 minutes several times a day will likely help your symptoms.
