Urinary Disorders

Continuing kidney issues or something else?

04/26/2008 03:02AM

Question:

In the last 10 months, I have been diagnosed with a kidney stone requiring 3 surgeries (ESWL, PERC, and URS). During the surgeries, I had a plasty of a stenotic infundibulum and a diagnosis of a partial bifed system in the renal pelvis. I continue to experience right flank pain, which can be quite severe at times. CT scans and renal Ultrasounds have recently been normal, as well as all kidney function tests. I have read that some acquired infundibular stenosises can be caused by VUR and also that flank pain can be a sign too. If VUR could cause flank pain, does this mean that it could lead to major kidney issues in the future, including kidney failure? Would a regular renal ultrasound show VUR? What do I need to know to be able to ask my primary for appropriate questions and help?

Answer:

A renal Ultrasound and CT scan may not always diagnose vesicoureteral reflux. Infindibular stenosis can be seen on CT or IVP. If you are still having discomfort, I would suggest that you follow up with your urologist for further assessment.
