04/30/2008 10:56PM

Question:

Hello-

Is there a permanent skin lighteners? Perhaps pills or creams/ointments? I am aware of some topical temporary ointments, but am interested to know if anything exists for a permanent effect. Thank you in advance.

Answer:

Darkening of the skin or hyperpigmentation has many causes including hormones, sun exposure, aging, drugs and chemicals as well as certain diseases. Treatment will depend on the cause. No drug treatment is considered irreversible.

Hydroquinone is a drug used to treat hyperpigmentation. It is applied topically as a cream or lotion.

Please discuss any concerns regarding skin lightening with your own doctor.
