My new grandaughter was born at 36 weeks, c-section, 4lbs 15 0z, my daughter had preeclampsia. The father is black, my daughter is caucasian. The baby is light, has blue eyes and jet black hair. Her labia are brown, is this normal? Also her bilirubin is 10 and she is breastfed. They have her under the lights. Everyone keeps telling me that her skin will darken later. Is this true? Thanks
No cause for alarm regarding the baby's skin color at this point. The newborn is not the best stage to gauge what the permanent skin color will be because the newborn can still be undergoing metabolic processes, eg. changes in bilirubin levels. Some areas of the skin may show signs of hyperpigmentation - the genitals being an example.
