Kidney Diseases

Worried mom

05/13/2008

Question:

My son is 4 and has had pain and problems with urination off and on for 2 months.  He has had protien in his urine twice and blood once. One of the tests on his urine came back with Microalbum., U, Random levels high (20.0), but the Creat ratio is normal. What does this mean? He has not been diagnosed with anything and I was wondering if it was something to worry about?

Answer:

It depends on the level of protein in the urine. If the level is low, i.e., 1+ or trace, then it is insignificant. If it is high, 3+ or 4+, then further evaluation may be necessary. You mentioned microalbuminuria, and that suggests to me that it is low. The discomfort with urination may be from having an elevated urinary calcium, highly concentrated urine, or meatal stenosis, in which the tip of the penis is narrow, causing turbulent flow at the urinary opening during voiding.
