Are any OTC medications useful?

05/29/2008

Question:

Are any OTC medications such as Midol useful for the management of premenopausal cramping and bloating? I am 48 years old and take lo-estrogen birth control to manage heavy frequent periods however I now have several weeks of cramping instead of frequent periods. This cramping/bloating, makes me feel just like I felt when I was premenstrual.

Answer:

You should not be having several weeks of cramping with use of oral contraceptives.  Please check with your doctor about any other possible causes of your symptoms.
