Is brown discharge an infection?

05/08/2008

Question:

i had a baby in january, i received the depo shot before i left the hospital. the depo shot caused me to bleed everyday since then, the bleeding seems to be going away, but now theres a brown discharge. is this an infection?

Answer:

Irregular bleeding is a common side effect of Depo-Provera. This bleeding is not usually heavy, is not dangerous, and does not mean there is an infection. However, if you are experiencing persistent lower abdominal pain, have a fever, or are concerned about having been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection, you should seek medical attention.

If it has been more than 13 weeks since you received the Depo-Provera, it is no longer working as a contraceptive method. If you want to continue using Depo-Provera, you will need to see your health care provider for the injection. With continued use, most women find that the bleeding improves and that they have longer time periods when they have no bleeding at all. Depo-Provera works well to prevent pregnancy and is very convenient to use. However, its not for everyone, especially if you can't tolerate the irregular bleeding. There are many other effective methods of contraception. If you want to switch methods, please contact your health care provider.
