Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

White particles

05/11/2008 10:53AM

Question:

I just blew my nose and yellow mucus came out that was kind of hard (not as much of a liquid or jelly) and on it were these little white, egg-like particles. There were close to 5 of them and then I blew more and clear, runny mucus came out with 5 to 10 more white egg like particles with it and a few white, stringy pieces. I was recently told that I might have polyps and had a very lardge flare up of my turbinate to the point that I could not breathe in the nostril that this is occurring in. That happened around 3 weeks ago. I took a nasal steroid for that and it went back down gradually. Could it be causing this?

Answer:

The symptoms you are describing may be consistent with nasal polyps. Mucus can become trapped in the polyps and become dried precipitate that can look like dried egg as you are describing. A full ENT evaluation with the possibility of allergy testing and a CT scan of your sinuses is warranted.
