Kidney cyst

05/12/2008 10:26PM

Question:

I have a 7 cm x 5.9cm cyst on my left kidney. I have pain in my left side occassionally. Sometimes it is bad enough to make me double over. Could this be from that cyst? Also, how large does a cyst have to be before they think about removing it? I`m a a 38 year-old white female and I know most of the information I have read says that cysts are more often found in people 50 and over, so I figured I would ask. We know the cyst was not there when I had my tubal and hernia surgery done 1 1/2 years ago. How quickly can they enlarge?

Answer:

There is no size qualification for removal of a kidney cyst. If the cyst looks cancerous it needs to be removed, even without symptoms. You should consult with a Urologist to determine if the cyst could be causing your pain.
