Gum irritation due to home whitening

05/13/2008 10:40AM

Question:

I recently used a at-home-whitening tray that took 2 hours to whiten. After I was finished, my gums are so red and painful that it is hard to sleep and eat. I was wondering if there is any product that can sooth the pain as it healss

Answer:

What happened was the material caused a burn on your tissue. If you try to bleach after the gingiva heals, make sure the material only touches the teeth and not the gingiva. There isn't really anything that will help them heal faster. The good thing is the oral cavity repairs itself quickly. I would avoid spicy foods, hot temperatures and any mouth rinses that contain alcohol during this healing process as those can irritate the tissues further.
