Unusual bleeding

05/23/2008

Question:

One week ago I started very light bleeding, a week early, but it has been known to happen. This one was not normal for me though. It started with light bleeding, and within a few hours turned VERY heavy, dark red, and had a few clots. It have also had headaches, back pain, moderate breast tenderness, brest swelling (almost a whole cup size bigger), bloating, and I am tired all of the time. Bleeding stopped for around 12 hours, but returned this morning with my first urination. I have seen my doctor about this but have yet to hear anything (5 days later), and I am a little worried about what it could be.

Thank you for your time,

-TR

Answer:

It is not unusual for a particular period to be earlier, heavier, or more painful than usual, as long as things return to normal afterwards.  The symptoms that you describe, however (breast tenderness, swelling, fatigue, etc.), are also symptoms of pregnancy, so it would be particularly important to check a pregnancy test.  If that is negative, and your doctor's exam did not reveal any abnormality, it is likely that this issue will resolve with your next cycle.
