Underdeveloped breasts

05/28/2008

Question:

Hi, I`m 18 years old and I`m curious as to why I can`t fit in an A cup bra. I started my period when I was 15 and all seems well, plus the women on both sides of my family are quite "well endowed" (around DD size). Mine appear normal, just small for no apparent reason. Is that due to a genetic defect? Poor nutrition during an important stage of life? Why is it that I, as well as my sister, didn`t luck out?

Answer:

Most women have about the same amount of breast tissue. The size of the breast is usually most dependent on the amount of fat tissue that is deposited around the breast tissue. Women with an A size can breast feed just as well as those with a DD size breast - both women actually have about the same amount of mammary or milk producing tissue. Some women have a genetic structure that deposits more fat around the breast tissue than others. You probably have a gene that gave you smaller breasts than other members of your family.

My best advice is to stand tall, be proud, and realize that it isn't quantity that makes a woman attractive, but rather her bearing and pride in herself. Don't judge yourself by other people's standards - you are unique and beautiful, and your breast size is perfect for YOU! If you are concerned that you have a hormonal or genetic problem, then please discuss it with your provider.

Hope this helps!
