Pancreatic Cancer

Noninvasive screening measures for pancreatic

05/26/2008 11:55AM

Question:

I recently discovered that I have a BRCA-2 mutation which has a correlation with pancreatic cancer-though not high. But, my uncle and first male cousin both died of pancreatic cancer-I am not certain of their BRCA status though they were both from my dad`s family and BRC was from my dad. I am 48 and do not want to go under general anasthesia for screening measures and am wondering if there are any other screening options. Please help and advise.

Answer:

That's correct about the increased risk especially with the family history. I would advise to see a gastroenterologist with expertise in pancreas cancer. Some recommendations include CT of pancreas protocol and then endoscopic ultrasound of pancreas which is very good test to look at whole of pancreas; this does not require general anesthesias.
