Can Isoniazid be Taken During Pregnancy?

06/12/2008

Question:

Greetings! I was tested positive for tuberculosis skin test and was starting my medication of isoniazid for a week now, but then I also tested myself positive with a pregnancy test kit yesterday. I need some advice whether to continue the drugs or the pregnancy, because I`m afraid of the side effects the drugs could do to the baby. Thanks for the help.

Answer:

Isoniazid is not thought to be dangerous to the developing fetus. The American Thoracic Society recommends the use of the drug for tubuculosis occurring during pregnancy because "untreated tuberculosis represents a far greater hazard to a pregnant woman and her fetus than does treatment of the disease."
